I am concurrently fitting the rebabbitted connecting rob bearings. I ve done four but keep wondering how much hand scraping or fitting should I do?
My thought is that Babbitt bearings are thick and soft, and will conform to a worn crankshaft (as opposed to inserts). I did not remove the crankshaft, so naturally I need to scrape in the new bearings to remove high spots. Because Babbitt will conform, I have been fitting these so that when lubricated with assembly grease I still have a slight drag. One finger about an inch or two from the journal can push the rod , sometimes they will fall under their own weight, but they are not loose. Clearances are no more than 0.002 . I figure when the engine runs, the Babbitt will conform and fit or find itself.
