I am an agency-fee payer and I am planning to retire soon. How does having agency-fee payer status with the UUP affect the benefits I receive at retirement?
• A: Membership status with UUP does NOT affect retirees’ eligibility for state-sponsored health insurance. However, to be eligible for dental, vision, and all the other benefits provided by UUP, NYSUT, and AFT, the retiree MUST be a full UUP member on the day they retire AND maintain a retiree membership during retirement, currently $34 a year. If you are an Agency Fee Payer on the day your retire, you will no longer qualify for any benefits provided by UUP or its affiliated organizations. Any union sponsored benefits you are receiving will be discontinued. That said, please note that all those who leave employment with the state for any reason, including agency fee payers, are eligible to maintain health, dental, and vision coverage under COBRA, but you are only eligible for 18 months of coverage under this law and you must pay the premiums out of your own pocket..
