I am a postgrad. Should I use the staff or student VPN server?
Postgrads (both taught and research) have access to the student VPN server. There are very few differences between the staff and student VPN servers- the main difference is regarding access to Windows fileservers. Microsoft filesharing protocols are blocked between student-vpn and most fileservers – this is partly because we have MS Client Access Licenses for staff but not for students. If you are a research postgrad in one of the two academic departments with their own VPN servers (Chemistry or Engineering) and have an academic need for it then your local IT support staff may be able to add you to the list authorised to access the departmental server – provided necessary CALs or per-server licenses are in place. You can check which VPN servers you have access to by using the VPN access checking utility.
