I am a carer but I get Income Support. Should I make a claim for Carer’s Allowance?
A. Yes. Most people on Income Support should claim Carer’s Allowance. If you are awarded Carer’s Allowance, although it will be deducted from your Income Support, you will still be better off as you will be entitled to the carers premium. You should get advice before claiming Carer’s Allowance if the person you care for lives alone and also gets Income Support, Pension Credit or Housing Benefit, as these could go down.
