I already have access point (AP) monitoring capabilities through my AP vendor. How is Elixars solution different?
Most AP vendors allow an administrator to query each AP to obtain performance statistics. While this is useful for network management, this system leaves several holes in the network monitoring process. First, vendor AP monitoring takes place over the wired network using SNMP, leaving some doubts over whether all query information is being correctly transmitted and received. Second, this type of monitoring does not tell you what is happening over the wireless network. For example, a vendor AP poll might tell you that two APs in the same proximity are functioning properly, but an analysis using AirTraf will show that because both APs are using the same channel, there is 50% packet loss. AirTraf allows you to fill in the information gaps that exist on your network. Lastly, only 40% of all switches are “smart” switches, which allow network administrators to identify potential rogue access points. On top of that, even if every switch is “smart”, polling for all MAC addresses on the network
