How young men felt about the porspect of august 1914?
They enlisted in droves, and everyone, even the military men, thought it would be a short war. They wanted to get in fast before the war was over. Little did they know…I think WWI was the single worst war overall for attrition. Great Britain lost something like 90% of its fighting-age men in the period 1914-18. And what of the ironic name “The War to End All Wars.” In reality it was the war to begin the modern age of warfare, a doubly painful transition. But in 1914, they were excited.
