Today there are a variety of grips commonly used in table tennis. Your entire game is based on how you hold the paddle, but how often have you thought about it your grip? Here are the most common grips and some of there advantages and disadvantages. The first grip is called hand shake grip or ‘shake hands grip.’ This is the most commonly used grip because it feels natural to most people. In this grip you hold your hand as if to shake hands with someone, with your thumb up and fingers extended. You then place the handle of the paddle in the “V” of you thumb and forefinger, with the face of the paddle up. Wrap your fingers around the handle and brace the face of the paddle between your thumb and forefinger. Be careful to keep your extended forefinger from extending into the face of the paddle.
