How WWII affected the lives of women and African Americans?
A great book to check out on the other valid experiences of Americans during WWII would be “Double Victory: A Multicultural History of America in World War II” by Ron Takaki. Very informative and interesting to read. But a quick breakdown on how WWII affected the lives of women were they were suddenly offered the chance to work and be something more than just a mother or a wife. The country encouraged women to leave the home and work since it would be considered patriotic so they did- in tough, manly jobs that were closed to them before- and they enjoyed the freedom and money. Rosie the Riveter became a national icon. It opened up new chances but when the men returned the women were told to go home even if they wanted to continue to work. Didnt matter since the bosses would fire them because they were women.
