How would you react to the registration of more political parties by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC?
We now have 54 and more are said to be in the pipeline. The INEC has no alternative than to comply with the provision of the 1999 Constitution which stipulates the requirements to be met before any organization is deemed to be fit to be registered as a political party. It is not an INEC’s problem. The requirements in the Constitution are so liberal that every organization that fulfils them cannot be denied registration. What makes the different is the sustenance of such political parties. How many of them can truly stand to be counted as existing political parties with structures nation-wide? There are several briefcase political parties that are only interested in INEC’s grants just to line the pockets of their officials. There are no ideological persuasion, no issues, and no clear-cut agenda other than that they want to be counted as political party. Let the parties increase to 100, those that will find their levels will naturally do so and others that will exist on the pages of news
