How would you knock the wind out of someones sails?
A cutting remark does the trick, something like as the rash gone, or was your dad found guilty, obviously they have to be based on good information but grossly exaggerated, other than that in nautical terms you sail between them and the prevailing wing and literally take the wind out their sails, this manoeuvre is used in yacht racing
