How would you go about understanding the landscape of IS systems and information held by an organisation?

Intetested in what techniques and methods people have found useful to develop an initial understanding of the IS systems and information managed by an organisation. I need this information before rationalisating the portfolio. Have considered some UML model (i.e. deployment/communication diagrams) but fear this may take too long.
