Ayr railway station and many older railway stations were built with what is called red sandstone, Sandstone is a type of sedimentary rock. It is made up of particles of preexisting rocks and minerals. There is lots of buildings throughout the uk made of this beautiful sandstone, Its familiar red colour arises from the presence of iron oxide but not all the old red sandstone is red or sandstone – grey shales and conglomerates are common depending on where abouts it was mined from. In general, sandstone has strong resistance to weathering. Iron content contained in sandstone formation contributes to common reddish colors. Natural sandstone was formed in in-land rivers or lakes, so it may contain certain visible fossils patterns. Sandstone can be quarried in large blocks and was commonly used in the architectural project where large scale high quality exterior decoration was needed.
