How would you describe a soldier in the poem Dulce et Decorum Est?

I’m not sure what you mean by ‘a Soldier’ Owen, as a Lieutenant was most likely the speaker in this poem. He and his Soldiers were dog-tired, returning from the trenches for some rest and most likely their guard was down. They were gassed by the German army in this state. Most likely their slow reaction time cause one not to mask in time, which is why the speaker had such a graphic experience seeing a man die from mustard gas. They were the opposite of what Horace was referring to when he wrote the original lines. Wilfred Owen and his Soldiers would tell you that war was anything but glorious.
