How would you describe a modern day north american indian?
The term “Indian” is still widely recognized. The term “Native American” is also widely used, and considered appropriate in some contexts, but it’s technically a bit inaccurate: a “native” is anyone born in the specified area, and “America” can include the entire Western Hemisphere. I often prefer the term “indigenous American” instead, and I have not found it likely to give offense, although I wouldn’t start an argument over it with anyone who just called themselves “Indian.” A reference to a specific tribe, if the person is a member of one, is also useful (at least, if one uses the tribe’s accepted name for themselves instead of some European appellation: Lakota or Dakota, as appropriate, is far preferable for many to “Sioux”).
