A lynch mob would not be preceded by a witch hunt. You burn witches, not hang them.

A lynch mob is a bunch of people who have set out to lynch (hang) somebody without trial. It is particularly associated with racism in the Deep South of USA, in the 20th century. There is no place for lynching (or judicial hanging for that matter) in modern society.
