How would we decide when to use a J-1 or an H-1B visa for a visiting researcher, lecturer, or professor?
J-1 visa status is usually the most appropriate visa status for international visitors who come to UCSC temporarily to teach or to engage in research as long as the position is not a tenure-track position. Documentation and processing time for this status are relatively short unless change of status is involved. J-2 spouses and children are allowed to apply for work authorization to the USCIS.
