Each Academy is set up as a company limited by guarantee with charitable status. The proposed Isle of Sheppey Academy would be sponsored by: • The Diocese of Canterbury of Education • Dulwich College • Kent County Council working in close partnership with the Department for Education and Skills (DfES). The Department for Education and Skills (DfES) would provide the capital costs and once the new Academy were opened, the government would cover running costs in much the same way as for any other state school. Sponsorship will be used to set up an endowment trust fund for future projects to combat barriers to inclusion and progression. A Board of Trustees and a Governing Body would manage the Academy. The sponsors would appoint the majority of governors, and the governing body would also include the Principal, and two elected representatives from the parent body (via a parent council for each school in the academy).
