How would the FPL Glades Power Park protect air quality?
The advanced technology coal plant would be among the cleanest, most environmentally-advanced coal power plants in the country. It would be outfitted with state-of-the-art pollution control equipment, ensuring that the facility meets or exceeds environmental protection requirements. The plant design would incorporate what’s called “ultra supercritical” technology. What that means is that the generating units would produce steam (which turns turbines to make electricity) at very high temperatures and pressures. The result is higher efficiency and lower emissions. In other words, compared to older, less efficient plants, the advanced technology coal plant that FPL is proposing would use less coal to produce the same amount of electricity with fewer emissions. The pollution control technologies are recognized by the Environmental Protection Agency and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection as effective methods for not only meeting, but doing better than federal air quality sta
