A person could visit an Amish area and talk to the Amish at roadside stands or stay in a Bed and Breakfast in an Amish area or where the Amish host visitors in their home. Answer coordinated by THE BUDGET Question: Jodi Picoult just wrote a book about the Amish called “Plain Truth” that was published by Pocket Books. How has it been received in the Amish communities? What kind of feedback has there been to her work of fiction? Answer: The Amish read fictionalized stories about themselves which are purchased from religious or secular publishers they trust. It really depends on how the fiction story is written. There are some which have been written that are pretty farfetched from the truth and the Amish do not read these books. With respect to Ms. Picoult’s book, our Amish contact has not heard of her book. [It should be noted, however, that our contact did indicate a willingness to possibly read the book and provide a response.] Answer coordinated by THE BUDGET Question: I am from Germ

Don’t know anything about the book but the Amish are both friendly to strangers and wisely careful. Most Amish treat their non-Amish neighbors as if their own kin- it would take a terrible amount of abuse and disrespect or alternately a show of impending danger to make the Amish not be friendly though wisely careful. The only way to meet the Amish is on their own ground- where they live, shop, work. I suggest you be honest, respectful, and allow plenty of time for the proving of your motives and character.Sadly, many tourists think a life long friendship can be iniated at a roadside produce farm or the front porch where a lady of the Amish has a quilt hung to sell.Such kindness and genuineness as the Amish will extend the tourist and visitorare rarely matched outside of Southern Hospitality in Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi, the Carolinas or even southern rural Virgina. But don’t expect to get on close terms quickly.Lived in Amish land all my life and have never heard of an Inn owned and run by true Amish where you can enter into their lives. Not even in Ohio or way west. Now there are people called by Gott to join the Amish. They move into the area, and by significant time of proving their true heart andmind are accepted into the Amish Church- Baptised and all. That is the only way. Some Amish, shunned, never return. Its not clear what those do.
