How would radiation be used to heat up a metal spoon in a saucepan of water?
Place the pan with the water and spoon close to the flames of the hob but, not touching the flame. Radiated heat will pass into the pan by Conduction of the heat through the metal. This in turn, will heat the water by causing Convection currents within the water. The convected heat will increase the water temperature due to the currents set up within the water. The heat of the water will be Conducted into the metal of the spoon which will also increase in temperature. If you hold the end of the spoon handle during the process, conducted heat along the handle will gradually increase the temperature and be felt by the fingers.
