I’m an academic in the UK who has been through both university and “grad school” here, so I understand the UK system much better than the US one, so forgive any inaccuracies introduced by my lack of knowledge of systems outside the UK. Student loans work rather differently here to other places. Domestic students do not, as a general rule, pay for graduate education here. There is a good system of government research councils which will provide grants which cover, as well as educational fees, the maintenance of the student whilst fulfilling the programme of study and research. These maintenance grants have increased markedly in recent years.
