How would one become a makeup artist?

Well first, obvioulsy you must have a strong interest in the beauty industry and have a drive to be a makeup artist. I have a bit of an obsession with makeup and beauty products and many of my friends have suggested me go into this industry, and eventually become a makeup artist, for a line of products or private (do weddings, celebrities, etc.) Having no professional experience what-so-ever, you would probably have to start working at a basic cosmetics counter in a department store, like Clinique. As you move forward and show interest in other brands, you would hopefully get promoted or moved to a line of your choice (a more “makeup” line like NARS, MAC, SMASHBOX, etc.) Then perhaps at this stage you probably have done many people’s make up (customers on a daily basis and/or wedding parties, girls for the prom, etc.) At this stage of my game, I would probably start a side business (word of mouth) while still working for the counter I am working with.
