How would I go about upgrading the speakers in the Impala? A: Just about any speaker would be a tremendous improvement over the weak GM units.
• Remove plastic speaker covers from rear deck. Rather than pry them off from inside the car (and risk breaking something), it is easier to compress the clips slightly with a pliers and push them up from inside the trunk. • Unscrew the four hex head screws from the speaker mounting. Use a 7mm quarter inch drive socket. • Lift out the old speaker. Depress the release button and disconnect the factory wiring harness from the speaker terminals. Laugh at the tiny magnets GM uses. • Crutchfield (and some other companies) send adapters with their speakers. You can also make some for your particular brand, which is suggested over direct splicing to the wires. Connect the adapter to the terminals of the new speaker, and connect the other end of the adapter to the factory wiring. No cutting, splicing, or soldering is necessary. The wiring is as follows: Brown = LR(+), Yellow = LR(-), Dark Blue = RR, Light Blue = RR(-). • Drop the speaker into the opening and replace the four screws.
