How would a soldier adopt a kid?

From Iraq, it would take a ream of paperwork. But I’ve heard of it happening. I’m not sure whether they’d authorize a single soldier to adopt a kid like that – the soldier would still be deployable and would likely spend several more years separated from the child. Maybe if the soldier was married. In the U.S., soldiers are given some time off if they want to adopt (not a lot, but some), and the child, after it is adopted, becomes a full military dependent just like a natural born baby is.
