It would depend on their age. Young women of the 1920s took to shortening their skirts, bobbing their hair, drinking, smoking, wearing makeup, driving automobiles,sunbathing, going out with young men without chaperones and generally living it up. Dieting became an obsession, as the fashionable figure was thin and flat-chested. “Reach for a Lucky instead of a sweet” said a commercial for a popular brand of cigarettes. Older women who belonged to amore serious generation were shocked by their behaviour. The ‘new women’ of the pre-WW1 generation who had beleived that they had a duty to make the world better were dismayed by the frivolity of the new generation.
