How will WSDOT test the vessel’s weight and stability? Will there be any load restrictions on the new ferry?

WSDOT has done a complete weight survey, looking at both intact and damage stability. With its design firm, Elliott Bay Design Group, WSDOT did a thorough analysis of all weights that were being removed from and added to the existing Island Home design. Based on this analysis, WSDOT is inserting a 20’ mid body to provide for additional vehicle capacity and to accommodate a projected Service Life Margin of 15% of the vessel’s weight over a 60 year service life. The service margin is the same as what is designed for the 144-auto ferries and is a preferred target chosen by naval architects in most vessel designs.
