How will they be sustainable, what features will they have that will make them sustainable?
The homes will be built to the challenging standards set out by Government in the Eco-town Planning Policy Statement (PPS) and the Code for Sustainable Homes. They will be low energy and low carbon in both the building and operational phases. The homes will be sustainable by using materials that have low impact on the use of resources and energy. This will include the use of waste and secondary aggregate, effectively turning waste into a resource. Key features will include: • Built from sustainable materials, including extensive use of clay waste • Be low carbon in construction • Performing to high levels of energy performance; using far less energy than a conventional home. • Well insulated • Using renewable energy • Using on-building energy generation technologies such as Solar thermal, Photo-Voltaic solar panels, etc (See below) to substitute non-renewable energy consumption • All household white goods (washing machines, etc) to be A+ rated for energy use • Extensive use of ‘smart’
