How will the wet conditions and flooding affect locust numbers?
Locust egg beds can withstand extreme weather conditions. The current wet weather and flooding is not likely to affect locust numbers over the longer term however cooler soil temperatures may delay hatchings and, as areas begin to dry out, potentially lead to uneven and protracted hatchings. Batches of eggs, laid at a depth of 2-10 cm, are sealed with a froth plug which protects eggs until suitable conditions are conducive for hatching and development.
