How will the Vetting and Barring scheme affect volunteers?
The scheme (launched in 2009) involves the screening of people working or volunteering with children or vulnerable adults. It does not replace CRBs; you will still need to have other safeguards in place. The scheme brings in new legal responsibilities for organisations to check that staff and volunteers carrying out “regulated activity” are permitted to work with children or vulnerable adults. Organisations will have to check that staff and volunteers are registered with the Independent Safeguarding Authority (www.isa-gov.org) and that they are permitted to work in regulated activity. Regulated activity includes: Certain types of work, eg: advice, caring, teaching, transport Work in certain places, eg: schools, hospitals and care homes Where this work is FREQUENT (once a week or more on a regular basis) or INTENSIVE (4 or more days in a 30-day period).
