How will the trial help manage acid sulfate soils in the region?
The trial will test how effective the technique is in managing acid sulfate soils on this scale. With the presence of water and moisture in the soil, ‘sulfate reducing’ bacteria in the soil can help to remove acid formed by acid sulfate soils. Revegetation can help provide the conditions needed by the bacteria to effectively carry out bioremediation. Stabilising soils and limiting wind erosion can also help manage the problems caused by acid sulfate soils.
