How will the Statewide Travel Demand Model that is being developed as part of the SWTP update work?
The travel demand model will include over 11,400 miles of the State’s most used portions of the total road network. These roads serve 67 percent of total travel and include the Interstate System, State routes and key county roads. The travel demand model will be able to simulate travel patterns and identify congested areas where more has to be done to facilitate mobility. Using the travel demand model and underlying data and information about the area, planners will also be able to identify areas where the level of demand in combination with the area’s socio-economic characteristics, may make it amenable to possible transit programs. The travel demand model’s base year is 2005 and the horizon year (future projections) is 2035. The Statewide Travel Demand Model will use the same software as the urban area’s travel demand models used by the metropolitan planning organizations for transportation analysis of urban needs.
