How will the REF accommodate researchers or departments whose work crosses the boundary between the sciences and other subjects?
We propose that researchers will be assessed on one or other side of the boundary, on the basis of the primary focus of their work. However we envisage that both systems will be sufficiently flexible to accomodate research from disciplines that straddle the boundary (for example, a researcher who has published work mainly in clinical psychology and hence falls on the science side, could still have their work in social psychology included in the bibliometrics process). We will do further work on this before making any detailed proposals.
