How will the opening of the proposed Mace Ranch Elementary school affect Willett?
A. As you may have seen in The Enterprise, there has been a great deal of discussion within the School District and at the Board of Education about the opening of a new K-6 school in Mace Ranch, already under construction. While residents of the Mace Ranch community have been waiting for many years for a school in their neighborhood, the school district has taken the position that to open a new K-6 school at this time is not a fiscally sound decision and will result in monies being taken away from existing school sites, including Willett, to pay for the necessary staff and overhead expenses of an additional school. At this point, an estimated $50,000 per elementary school has been projected as the cost of opening this new school. To put that in perspective, last year due to the district wide budget cuts, Willett lost library aide time and school secretarial time, which reduced our budget by $18,000.
