This region is of strategic importance to our national security where reliable, real-time communications are vital. Agencies and institutions that will be able to utilize the capabilities offered by the Northern Fiber Optic Link include the U.S. Coast Guard, Department of Homeland Security, Department of Defense, Department of State and local law enforcement agencies. Of particular interest is the need to track the growing number of international ships that may start transiting the waters off the coast of Alaska as new shipping routes through the Arctic open due to melting Arctic ice.
