How will the new law affect employee chaperones involved in class trips?

Although NJPSA is awaiting clarification on this issue, class trips appear to be covered under the category of “regular school district business” since the intent of such class trips is generally to provide educational, co-curricular or extra-curricular opportunities for students. Lodging for chaperones on class trips is eligible for reimbursement at the federal per diem rates. Therefore, if the hotel at which the chaperone is staying charges a rate in excess of the applicable federal per diem rate, the chaperone will be responsible for paying the difference in cost between the federal per diem rate and the actual hotel charge.
