How will the natural environment be protected after annexation?
Annexation is about changing municipal jurisdictions. It is not about immediate development, although planning for development will occur in some areas soon after annexation. Until planning and subdivision occur, lands remain in their present natural state or the existing rural land uses continue. The City of Calgary is committed to protecting natural and environmentally significant areas as part of our planning processes. Environmental and Municipal Reserve is often used to protect these high quality areas from development. Good examples include the Elbow River area in New Discovery as well as Nose Hill. Where development does occur in natural amenity areas, policies require sensitive development treatment.
