This will result in prompt followup on missing sources, thereby improving the ability to detect their diversion and malevolent use in real-time. Second, the NSTS will allow origin-to-endpoint accounting of all nationally tracked sealed sources. Finally, regulatory decision-makers will have reliable data for use in long- and short-term planning regarding the use, storage, and disposal of nationally tracked sources. This capability did not exist prior to the development of the NSTS.
