How will the MHSA Support the Needs of the Latino Communities?
A. Latinos comprise over 60% of Monterey Countys population and show the highest unmet need for mental health services. All MHSA strategies aim to meet the need of the Latino community by responding to the needs identified during the planning process, by increasing access to services, by hiring bilingual staff and by providing services in a culturally and linguistically competent manner. The Behavioral Health Division of the Monterey County Health Department is now contractually requiring all new mental health service providers to deliver services in a culturally and linguistically competent manner. One strategy specifically implemented to meet the needs of the Latino community is the Promotores Community Partnership. Promotores Community Partnership Projected Start Date: January 2007. Two established community organizations, the Center for Community Advocacy and the Central Coast Citizenship Project, joined together to provide health education and facilitate access to mental health se
