How will the government ensure the protection and long-term environmental sustainability of the AFRs?
The aquaculture industry will be required to undertake environmental monitoring in accordance with the ‘Guidelines for Environmental Baseline Surveys and Ongoing Monitoring of Aquaculture Fisheries Reserves’. The Guidelines provide instructions on how to conduct baseline survey before they start aquaculture activity and ongoing monitoring of their Crown leases in accordance with the Environmental Management Framework and can be found on the Guidelines page. The purpose of the management plan is to specify the policies and strategies for managing activity within the relevant aquaculture fisheries reserves. All management plans include an environmental management framework including baseline surveys to be undertaken by the Crown lease holders for greenfield sites, an ongoing monitoring program to be undertaken by aquaculture licence holders, and auditing and reporting requirements. For further information please refer to the relevant management plan.
