How will the general public benefit? How soon will results be evident?
• The benefits of a research-based medical university will be seen throughout the region most assuredly before the first classes begin. In Scranton, Pennsylvania, the Commonwealth Medical College will see its first students in the fall of 2009. Though the college is not yet open to students, Scranton has already seen the benefits from the arrival of the medical school with the addition of new jobs to the region directly attributed to the medical and the indirect benefits of new service and retail establishments, as well as, expanded residential developments. • A new medical school is an investment for the future. Our children and grandchildren need strong health care opportunities as well as high-paying career opportunities here in this region. • The Southern Highlands region of Central Appalachia (Virginia, Tennessee, South Carolina, West Virginia, Kentucky, and North Carolina) has some of the highest numbers in the country with regards to the prevalence of diabetes, obesity, arthriti
