How will the Express Pass electronic payment system work?
UDOT will offer an unlimited number of Express Passes (transponders) for purchase and each Express Pass holder will set up an online account. The new system is able to manage capacity in the lanes by using the supply-and-demand concept. It will charge solo-drivers by using an algorithm that adjusts the price based on traffic conditions with costs highest during peak traffic. The Express Lanes will be divided into four payment zones with overhead signs that show the price to travel in each zone. Readers at several locations along the Express Lanes detect in-vehicle Express Passes as they travel through the zones. Drivers’ accounts will be charged the price in effect when they first entered each zone after they exit the Express Lanes.
