How will the election of Vicente Fox impact the political and economic crisis in Mexico?
While many claim that the the election of Fox has brought “legitimacy” and “democracy” to México, this represents more the internal crisis within the political system which after 70 years found itself unable to control the Mexican people along the same traditional style. The entire Mexican population is expecting a level of democratic change that Fox is both physically and ideologically incapable of carrying out. Powerful national and international interests understood clearly that in order to postpone an inevitable revolutionary transformation of México the PRI would publicly have to be removed from power. One non-PRI presidency will not overcome the permanent crisis México is in. In fact, with every “sexenio” (the six years a Mexican president holds office) the crisis sharpens in México.
