How will the deer be affected by the loss of protection provided by the Endangered Species Act?

0

Under section 4(g) of the Act, a species must be monitored for a minimum of five years after delisting to be sure that removing the species from the protection of the Act does not result in a reversal of the species’ recovered status. If the population trend of a delisted species declines, the Service would consider once again placing the species on the list, including immediate emergency listing, if appropriate. Question: Who will be responsible for implementing and funding the five-year monitoring plan for the delisted population? Answer: The Service will implement a program in cooperation with ODFW to monitor the status of the population. The Service is authorized to provide financial assistance to the state agency to help monitor a recovered species for the mandatory five-year period. A monitoring plan, developed by the Service in cooperation with ODFW and the Columbian White-Tailed Deer Recovery Team, has been prepared and is included as part of the supplemental proposed rule.
