Steve Mullen over at Video Systems has an explanation of how he believes the new Canon XL H1 will achieve the look of 24P with its interlaced only CCDs. The look of 24P has become popular through cameras like the DVX100 and XL2 but these camera both feature the ability to capture progressive frames of video unlike the XL H1 which will only have the ability to shoot interlaced. Canon is calling their new HDV 24 fps format, 24F and no technical information on how the camera will achieve the look of 24P has yet to surface. Mullen believes that Canon has two options to achieve this look, the first being running the camera at 48Hz while using some complex math to achieve a full frame of video. The other option would be to use smart deinterlacing to combine both fields of video to make a full frame but this method would lead to a big drop in resolution especially with moving objects.
