How will the alternative assessment be scored?
The performance of students with severe disabilities can be documented through direct assessments that yield products such as student written work/products, videotaping, audio taping or observation of the student demonstrating a performance task. Multiple pieces of student “work” (3-5 pieces of evidence) are collected in an assessment datafolio that are scored with a rubric. The NYSAA rubric is based on a scale of 4 to 1. These levels evaluate the students performance toward meeting the standards and the supports needed (self-advocacy, settings where the skill was demonstrated and social interactions) to demonstrate mastery of the standards.
