How will Taiwans relationship with the U.S. evolve under the new government?
There is an urgent need for the new leadership of Taiwan to restore trust between Washington and Taipei. There have been too many unpleasant surprises, such as the referendum on the U.N. issue, and surprise trips (by outgoing President Chen Shui-bian) to places like Libya. This has tremendously damaged the trust and confidence that has been the basis of the Taiwan-Washington relationship and has to be restored. This will take some time. If that is done, then we will move on. What is most important for Taiwan is to maintain a triangular peace between mainland China and Taiwan, and then you can talk about bilateral issues. What is Taichung’s appeal for new investors and home buyers from the mainland? Property prices are about one-third those of Taipei, and the vacationing is better. I think central Taiwan will be a surprise for them. They have heard of Taipei or Kaohsiung. But Taichung is the best stepping stone for Sun Moon Lake and Alishan.
