How will Sc1 be assessed in the SATs papers?
The number of questions in the SATs papers that focus on Sc1 will be increased. Sc1 questions may be set in the context of Sc2, Sc3 or Sc4, or they may be set in new contexts that do not require recall of scientific knowledge. Sc1 may be tested via whole or part questions. The total number of marks in the papers will remain the same, so there will be a reduction in the numbers of questions testing the other three attainment targets. What form will the questions take? The Sc1 questions in the SATs tests may ask pupils to • explain what question is being investigated • describe how an investigation/enquiry could be carried out • identify the factors that need to be controlled • identify the factors that need to be measured • say whether the outcome can be predicted • describe how the results are going to be presented • explain what the results show and whether they match the prediction • explain the outcome • explain whether the evidence collected is significant, reliable and valid.
