How will SAMI evaluate the Security Companies?
The initial evaluation process and barrier to SAMI entry is based on being signatory to the ICoC. After that, and once part of SAMI, the company will join a Working Group (WG) to set best maritime security management practice, and to develop Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) – these will form the first part of a more strenuous formal accreditation process. In dialogue with maritime industry stakeholders we have seen that the wider industry wants to better understand how MSC are established, managed, resourced, and how they operate. In this sense we are creating a system which mirrors existing maritime provisions, and we believe that something along the lines of OCIMF’s Tanker Management and Self Assessment (TMSA) programme would make an excellent model to follow. This will allow companies to work with SAMI and to take a realistic look internally, as they open themselves up to the formal accreditation.
