How will Premera be affected by NPI?
Fortunately, Premera’s internal systems have been designed to require Provider Name and Tax Identification Number for claims processing. This means that the introduction of the NPI will not affect our claims processing operations. Thus, claims without an NPI will continue to process normally. However, please note that for providers to be within HIPAA compliance electronic claims must contain a valid NPI after May 23, 2007. Important Note: CMS announced a contingency plan of 12 months after the compliance date for the use and acceptance of either NPI or legacy identifiers. Premera is prepared to support providers whether they use NPI or Tax ID or just Tax ID during this period.
