How will MS affect my ability to get motor insurance?
You have to inform the DVLA’s Drivers Medical Unit (Telephone 0870 600 0301) that you have MS. As long as medical evidence says your driving is not affected, you should be able to retain your current licence. If your doctor believes your ability to drive may deteriorate, you may be given a reviewable one, two or three year licence. You may alternatively be given a licence to drive an adapted vehicle. However, as long as the DVLA is happy for you to have a driving licence, you should be able to get insurance. Any insurer that refuses you without justification is likely to be contravening the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 (DDA1995). Insurance companies are not allowed to have a blanket policy of refusing to insure adapted vehicles. However they may ask you to pay more to cover the extra cost of repairing or replacing any special adaptations to your car, if it is stolen or damaged.
